30 May Nationwide Action Needed to Put a Stop to the Criminalization of the Mentally Ill
We all know that Darren Rainey, a severely mentally ill person, should not have been detained in a law enforcement environment. We are all ashamed that we live in a society that would lock this 50-year-old man in a shower for an hour for punishment for defecating in his cell. And, we surely know that scalding himself to death in that shower and listening to his screaming to his death is abhorrent.
The lost people, sitting in jails and prisons suffering with mental illness, deserve attention.
A major, national, immediate and systemic overhaul is calling for our attention.
